BICO (Blantyre Institute for Community Outreach) is advancing immunization equity and improving child health in Malawi through innovative research, community engagement, and evidence-based healthcare solutions. Through implementation research in Dowa, Ntcheu, and Mchinji districts, BICO has identified key barriers to vaccine access among under-immunized and zero-dose children, including misinformation, vaccine hesitancy, long travel distances, limited access to health information, and sociocultural factors. By applying mixed-methods research, geospatial mapping, health facility screening, and stakeholder engagement, BICO is developing and implementing sustainable, community-centred strategies to strengthen vaccine delivery, improve monitoring, and increase access to essential immunization services, including HPV vaccination. Recognized nationally and internationally, BICO’s work contributes to stronger health systems, improved vaccine equity, and better health outcomes for children and families across Malawi.
