BICO implemented a three-year eye health project from 2014 to 2016 across six districts in Malawi’s South East Health Zone: Mangochi District, Balaka District, Machinga District, Zomba District, Phalombe District, and Mulanje District.
Funded by the Kilimanjaro Centre for Community Ophthalmology, the project focused on reducing preventable blindness through cataract treatment, childhood blindness interventions, and the correction of refractive errors. In addition, BICO strengthened healthcare delivery through staff training and institutional capacity building to improve access to quality eye care services in underserved communities.
The project contributed to enhanced eye health services and increased support for vulnerable populations affected by visual impairment across Southern Malawi.
