BICO is implementing a five-year trachoma elimination project in Malawi with funding from the Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Trust. The project supports the implementation of the SAFE strategy, a comprehensive approach aimed at eliminating trachoma, one of the leading causes of preventable blindness.
As part of the initiative, BICO conducts Trachoma Impact Surveys, Surveillance Surveys, and Drug Coverage Surveys across 15 trachoma-endemic districts in Malawi to monitor progress and strengthen disease control efforts.
BICO is also leading Surgery and Antibiotics (S & A) interventions in Chikwawa District, Nsanje District, and Machinga District through trachomatous trichiasis (TT) surgeries and Mass Drug Administration (MDA). In addition, BICO implements antibiotic distribution campaigns in Mchinji District, Ntcheu District, Mangochi District, and Dowa District.
Through these interventions, BICO continues to strengthen eye health services, reduce the burden of trachoma, and improve the quality of life for vulnerable communities across Malawi.
